From Winoa France to world conquest

Winoa (formerly Wheelabrator Allevard) was created in France, in 1961, to introduce steel abrasive in Europe, a new technology that would revolutionize sandblasting and descaling operations in the casting and forging industry.

60 years on, the group has become world leader in its historical business activity thanks to the dynamic attitude of our staff coupled with an active acquisitions policy.  

Our organic growth is the fruit of major investment in production capacity and sustained efforts in innovation.

It has been promoted by the paramount importance that Winoa places in training its technicians and sales staff. The cornerstone of its external growth has been the methodical penetration of the world market

History

Wheelabrator Allevard was born from a joint venture between the American company Wheelabrator Corp. and the French company Hauts Fourneaux et Forges d’Allevard, a subsidiary of the French Wendel group. In 1961, Wheelabrator developed its business in France, Germany and Spain, with 90% of its sales in these countries.. In 1966, the first technical center is built at Le Cheylas site to develop customer blasting process.

1980'

In 1980, a IT service is created to develop informatic tools 1985, the separation of the “société des forges d’Allevard” and “wheelabrator allevard” is done. A new technical department was created for shot production, as well as the first R&D center.

1990’

Environmental protection, a priority for Wheelabrator Allevard since the beginning, became a a challenging issue for the laboratory from 1990. It was extended to include continuous monitoring of waste, and sedimentation sludge. In 1991, Wendel became the sole shareholder.

2000’

In 2000, in order to adapt at their customers, Wheelabrator developed the premium products. This new technology will bring a new dimension in abrasives sector. Indeed, it’s the only way to increase efficiency the projection speed using the smallest possible shot size for the number of impacts.

2005

The company was taken over by the LBO France investment fund with management participation.  

1933

Johann Eder is granted a patent for the “device for producing metal grains”. In the basic principle, the spinning off of liquid iron from a rotating disk, this device is still used today.

2008

Creation of “W Abrasives” trademark to reinforce the steel abrasives offer.

2011

Wheelabrator Allevard celebrated its 50th birthday and changed its corporate identity to Winoa. 

2019

Launch of the “Connect” project to gradually switch systems and applications to the cloud and start industry 4.0 implementation.

Life at Winoa France

Many activities are available for our collaborators such as yoga or badminton through partnership we have with local organizations.

Our localization in natural surroundings allows individual sports during breaks, showers are at disposal in the admin building, as well as our Winobar where everybody can meet and have a good time.
